A small allocation of Champagne Pol Roger at £44 per bottle and £98 per magnum
Beloved of Sir Winston Churchill (he even named his racehorse Pol Roger and once described Pol’s HQ in Epernay as ‘the world’s most drinkable address’), Pol Roger is a spectacularly fine champagne and we are delighted to offer a selection of bottles here to our readers.
The Pol Roger Brut Réserve NV £528.00 (per 12 bottles inc VAT), still known to its many aficionados as ‘White Foil’, is perfectly judged. Blended from 30 or more base wines drawn from different vineyards and different vintages (Pol being famous for the high percentage of reserve wines it uses), it’s a neat one third each of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. With plenty of bottle age (UK stocks get an extra six months over and above the regular minimum three years), the wine is full of nuts, apple, brioche and honeysuckle enlivened by a touch of citrus and blessed with a deliciously fine and creamy mousse. Good grief it’s good.
Pol Roger Brut NV is also available in handsome magnums £588 (per 6 magnums inc VAT), ideal statements of intent for Christmas celebrations, parties or simply as a treat for oneself. After all, as Sir Winston famously observed, ‘A magnum is the ideal size for two gentlemen to share over lunch, especially if one of them isn’t drinking’ – it's also the perfect bottle to celebrate Churchill’s birthday on 30 November!
