Win an overnight stay for two with dinner and cocktails at The Dorset Arms, Withyham, East Sussex

This month we are delighted to have teamed up with The Dorset Arms, Withyham, East Sussex to offer one Spectator Club member the chance to win a nights’ bed and breakfast for two along with a three-course dinner including a welcome cocktail and a bottle of house wine.

Jonathan Ray, The Spectator’s drinks editor, says: 'The Dorset Arms, Withyham, East Sussex, is a fine spot. Built in 1595, it became a public house in 1735 and, apart from a brief spell under the stewardship of Harvey’s of Lewes, has always been in the hands of the same family with William Sackville, 11th Earl De La Warr, the current owner.

This wonderful pub sits at the entrance to Buckhurst Park, the seat of the Sackvilles most famous for its One Hundred Acre Wood, home to Winnie the Pooh and friends. Ashdown Forest is to the west and Royal Tunbridge Wells to the east.

The Dorset Arms makes a fine pit stop. There’s a low-beamed bar, well stocked with local ales, a dining area complete with old maps, family pictures and Spy cartoons, antlers on the walls and stuffed pheasants.

And the food is excellent, showcasing the best that Sussex has to offer. The Buckhurst Park Scotch egg is a must for a starter as is the fabled Harvey’s Rarebit. Main courses include Buckhurst Park venison pie; wild mushroom and marjoram gnocchi; chargrilled côte de boeuf to share. Everything is sourced locally where possible and the beef comes from Buckhurst Park’s own pure-bred, pasture-fed pedigree Sussex cattle.

The wines, too, are first rate with traditional Rhône, Bordeaux and Burgundy rubbing shoulders with choice examples from New Zealand, Oregon and Argentina. Best of all, treats such as 2012 Ch. Cantemerle, 2003 Ch. Meyney and 2017 Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape are available from Lord De La Warr’s own private reserve.

The pub has nine beautifully refurbished bedrooms and Lord De la Warr is offering one lucky Spectator reader bed, breakfast and dinner for two and the chance to wander the many footpaths of Buckhurst Park. He would also be delighted to join the winner and guest for aperitifs. You might even bump into Winnie the Pooh and Eyeore. Good luck!'
